How Does Your Site Measure Up?

Monday, February 23rd, 2009
You've got a great new website. You have visitors coming in daily. You've seen your traffic report. But you can't help wondering "how do I compare to everyone else?" Google Analytics Benchmarking can show you. Google Analytics Benchmarking service provides a look at your Website's statistics compared with industry verticals. Simply put, it can show you how your site compares to other sites of similar size in your industry. So how does it work? First Google collects anonymous data from thousands of websites, aggregates the data, and categorized them by industry. This data is fed into your Google Analytics account as a series of benchmarks to compare your own site statistics to. Currently, benchmarking compares:
  • Number of Visits
  • Bounce Rate
  • Page Views
  • Average Time On Site
  • Pages/Visit
  • New Visits
For each statistic, you'll see a graphical representation of your statistics compared to the benchmark. You will be able to tell at a glance where your site falls. Second, it provides you with data associated with each statistic. You might see, for example, that for the time period you are viewing your website had 1,733 Visits. Directly below this stat, you will see the benchmark. Let's say the benchmark is 2,912 visits. This website is below the benchmark, and may need to step up marketing efforts to catch up to the competition. Google also shows the difference between your website and the benchmark. In the above example, this site is 40.49% below the benchmark. That is some serious ground to make up. Setting Up Benchmarking To enable Benchmarking, navigate to the "Visitors" report in your Analytics account, and click the "Benchmarking" link. On the following page, click the provided link to change your data sharing settings. Follow the simple steps to make changes, and voila! you have enabled benchmarking. Don't forget to select the proper category for your website by using the "Open Category List" link. By enabling Google Benchmarking in your Analytics account, you will be able to get a look at your online competition, and see where your website can make some improvements. Used correctly, it can show you where you may need to focus marketing and design efforts to bring your website in line with industry norms, increase sales, and maximize your web presence.

Maximize Site Performance with Analytics

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009
Web sites that aren't using Web analytics are missing out on a wealth of customer data. This data can help them outstrip their competitors and grow into an online powerhouse. Web Analytics isn't anything new. In the 1990's webmasters monitored the number of page requests, or "hits", made to their servers. Then websites grew to encompass multiple pages, images, subdomains, and other manner of web technologies. As websites evolved, so too did analytics. Today website tracking codes provide an almost overwhelming amount of traffic data. Here at Vortx, we love Google Analytics. It's free, easy to install, and the dashboard is intuitive and user friendly. Yet, we know that many of our clients, indeed many websites out there in general, do not possess any sort of analytics tracking. So, why analytics? In a recent post on LinkedIn, one commenter said webmasters should view their websites as "behavior tracking data machines". Google Analytics has an entire section dedicated to visitor behavior. Let's start with the basics. The simplest data you get with Google Analytics is:
  • Number of Visitors
  • Top Page Hits
  • Keywords used to find your site
Number of Visitors is a very basic gauge of how well your site is attracting visitors. Top Page Hits takes analyzing visitors one step further, and shows what pages are being requested most often on your site. This provides tremendous insight into how well the pages that sell things or generate leads are doing. If they're not in the top ten for your site, they probably aren't getting seen as much as they should. Now you know which pages to start optimizing. Keywords show you which search terms led to someone landing on your page. Paid ads are hugely popular, but if the keywords you're spending money on aren't listed here, it's time to rethink your ad strategy. Next, ask yourself these questions:
  1. Do you know what percentage of your visitors are returning visitors?
  2. Do you know what browsers your visitors are using?
  3. Do you know how many users make it to the checkout process then leave before buying?
If you answered "no" to any of the above, then Google Analytics can help you. I will break down the reasons by question:
  1. Returning visitors spend more time on the site, and are more inclined to make purchases or generate leads. If you notice an extremely low percentage of return visitors, you may need to fix your site's content or usability.
  2. Different browsers display Web pages differently. We all hate it, but it's a reality. If you developed your site using Firefox, you may not have seen how it looks in Internet Explorer. If you notice most of your visitors are using a browser you did not test in, they may not see your site in all its glory due to display quirks.
  3. If you find that many of your users make it to the checkout page then leave your site without purchasing anything, it could be a sign that something is seriously wrong with your checkout process.
If you are an eCommerce site, Google Analytics will become your obsession. Aside from tracking visitor volume, you will now have access to one of the most important stats for E-tailers: Conversion Rate. Conversion rate is simply how many people out of X are making purchases. Having 5000 visitors a month is great, but if you're only selling to 1% of those, then rethinking your sales pitch, optimizing your product pages, and emphasizing your value proposition are things to consider. It may seem like I've just covered a lot, but this only scratches the surface of the data Google Analytics can provide. See our other articles on Knowing Your Traffic and Event Tracking. If you need help with your Google Analytics implementation or parsing through your data, contact us and we'll be happy to assist you, or check out the Google Analytics Packages in our store.

How to Track “Add to Cart” Clicks

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009
Google Analytics With the release of Google Analytics Event Tracking, users can learn about their customers in ways they previously couldn't. The biggest new feature,  from an eCommerce standpoint, is the ability to see what users are adding to their carts. Adding the new Event Tracking code to the Add to Cart buttons on product pages (which only requires modifying one line of code in many shopping carts like AspDotNetStoreFront) lets us capture the SKU and pass it into the ga.Js trackevent method to be recorded in Google Analytics. The method looks like this: _trackEvent(category, action, optional_label, optional_value) For example, we might want to send “Shopping Cart”, “Item Added”, and “SKU”. In reports from Google Analytics, we would then be able to narrow down results by category, and see which SKUs were added to a cart. Event Tracking can also monitor when items are deleted from carts. By tracking these events, clients could see which products are being constantly added to carts, but not purchased. Identifying which products are getting cut means you can make changes and hopefully increase conversions. Using the Event Tracking also gives a better understanding of bounce rates. Google measures a bounce as a single page hit and then exit. But, what if there is a video on a landing page, and a user hits "play" and watches the video? Previously, if the user watched the video and left, Google would count this as a bounce. With the event tracker, you can send the information about the Play button click to Google, and Google won't count it as a bounce when the user leaves. The Google event tracker can also track interactions with Flash and Ajax, which can be used to serve content using the same page, and thus only call the Google tracking pixel one time. An in-depth guide for the event tracker can be found here. If you have Google Analytics on your site and would like to know how Event Tracking can help you, send us an email, we'd be glad to help. What are some other applications that you'd want to use the new Google Event Tracker to monitor? What else do you want to be able to track with Google Analytics?  Leave a comment below!

Know Your Customers, Know Your Traffic

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008
So you have a website and you are getting visitors. But do they make it to your products, the real meat and potatoes, or are they simply seeing the home page and little else? Knowing which pages your visitors are seeing, and more importantly where they are leaving from, is key to any site's success. This is where Google Analytics comes in. A small bit of code will give you access to a wealth of information to help you pinpoint your site's strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement. Understanding Traffic Sources Let's say that, after installing Google Analytics, you are seeing 80% of your traffic coming from direct sources. This means that someone is typing your site's name in to the address bar in their browser. Chances are these are customers that know your site or have heard from their friends about you. But this likely means you are missing out on the average web surfers who go to Google and types in a search term. Why aren't you getting traffic from there? People aren’t finding your page. This may be a sign that you need to spend some time to better optimize your keywords, add alt-text to your images, or improve the meta-data on your page. After implementing these changes, you may see an increase in traffic from all sources, not just search. Funnels and Paths Google Analytics also has funnel and goal functionality. By setting up a funnel, you create a path to a specific page, such as an Email Signup or a Thank You page. By analyzing the funnel, you can see where along the path your users are jumping from your site. Are they leaving after three pages? Maybe your signup page is buried too far in your site, and you need to link directly to it from the home page. Are users adding items to their carts, but stopping short of purchasing? Perhaps you are asking for too much information, or your customers do not know that your site is secure. This is just a peek at what information you will have access to from Google Analytics. At Vortx, we can help you install Google Analytics on your website, as well as help you dig through the mountains of data to pinpoint the areas of your site that can be improved on to help bolster sales, generate leads, and increase the success rate of your online endeavors.
