    Ian,

Nice post, but how much security is enough? Some websites have five or six security badges, from security-providing services that have overlapping or redundant protections. That seems like overkill.

As I understand it, “security” in this context has two different but related aspects.

    (1) Security of the site itself. This is so that people visiting the site have confidence the site is secure and, thus, THEIR VISIT to the site is secure. That kind of security is more of the domain of the SSL certificate products like VeriSign Secure Site, Digicert SSL products, GoDaddy Standard and Premium SSL, McAfee Secure, etc.

    (2) Security and management of the monetary transaction, on the site and through to our bank account. This is to ensure people that their payment information is secure and to ensure us that the transaction flow gets our money to us as efficiently and securely as possible. This is more of the domain of PayPay Pro, Authorize.net, Google Checkout, etc.

So, back to the key question, how much security is enough to ensure your site is protected and that you’re providing confidence to people using it? Is it as simple as picking one brand-name provider from each of the lists above?
